Since 2002, the Barclays Arena in Hamburg's Volkspark has attracted numerous visitors – whether from the city, the surrounding area, or all over Germany and Europe. The Barclays Arena is one of the largest and most sought-after multifunction arenas in Germany.
Bands from all over the world perform at the Barclays Arena. It is also the venue for well-known shows and musicals as well as important sporting events, including basketball, handball, and wrestling. Up to 16,000 visitors can be accommodated in the arena, which is 150 meters long and 110 meters wide. Depending on the event, the hall is reconfigured and can thus accommodate a wide variety of formats.
On average, 130 events take place annually in the Barclays Arena, attracting more than one million enthusiastic visitors in total. Also due to its prominent location in the easily accessible Volkspark and in close proximity to the Volksparkstadion, the Barclays Arena has become an indispensable part of Hamburg's cityscape.
The Barclays Arena – From the Groundbreaking to Today
The Hanseatic city already began planning a new multipurpose hall in 1997. After many different proposals and initiatives, a former landfill site in the Volkspark of Altona was finally selected as the location for today's Barclays Arena. After some bureaucratic hurdles, the groundbreaking took place on June 13, 2001.
Just over one and a half years later, on November 8, 2002, the venue was officially opened, initially under the name Color Line Arena. The construction costs amounted to a proud 83 million euros. Shortly after its inauguration, the hall developed into a crowd magnet. The thrilling concerts and sensational shows held there often became the talk of the town.
The first name change of the hall took place in 2010. After the builder Harry Harkimo sold the arena in 2005, and the new owner also transferred the hall, the Color Line Arena was initially renamed the o2 Arena. In 2015, the British financial company Barclays acquired the naming rights, and the multifunction hall received the official name Barclaycard Arena. In 2021, the name was finally changed to Barclays Arena.
The Ideal Venue for Concerts, Shows, and Sporting Events
Today, the Barclays Arena delights its visitors with many different formats. In addition to regular concerts, there are musicals, magic shows, sports, acrobatics, and martial arts to admire. From 2002 to 2016, the Hamburg Freezers played their home games in the arena. Other ice hockey events also repeatedly attract fans.
The Barclays Arena also serves as the venue for home games of HSV Hamburg, games of the German Handball League, and even the Handball World Championship 2007. Basketball games are also part of the program. The hall is also equipped for various e-sports events and dart competitions.
Latest Technology and Extensive Gastronomy Offerings at the Barclays Arena
The Barclays Arena is technologically state-of-the-art and can thus also be used as a venue for events or impressive stage shows that place high demands on power supply, lighting, or other technical equipment.
The arena also takes care of physical well-being. Ticket holders for the Barclays Arena can choose between two public and two premium restaurants as well as four bars with a total capacity of 2,000 people. Additionally, there are 17 fast-food outlets in the concourses, so no culinary wishes remain unfulfilled.
